Innocence Lab
Alongside its professional activities, the firm devotes a significant portion of its resources to pro bono initiatives, acting in proceedings of significant social relevance or aimed at safeguarding fundamental rights. This commitment reflects a vision of the legal profession based on responsibility, civic engagement and the guarantor role that criminal law plays in a rule-of-law system.
As part of the initiatives focused on preventing or overturning wrongful convictions, Professor Luca Lupária Donati serves as Director of the Italy Innocence Project, a non-profit organisation that also includes clinical legal education programmes. In this capacity, he served as Counsel on the first case in which a conviction was overturned following a judgment of the European Court of Human Rights, marking a significant development in the system of procedural safeguards.
These roles entail a solid and ongoing commitment focused on the review of potential miscarriages of justice, the development of tools to help prevent wrongful convictions and the promotion of high standards of reliability in criminal proceedings. Through these activities, the firm uses its exceptional expertise and academic thought leadership to the benefit of high-impact social initiatives, contributing to the structural improvement of the criminal justice system. Professor Lupària Donati has published several leading volumes on the topic of judicial error.
